Relationship between Domestic Gender Violence and Depression in Peruvian Women

Abstract

Introduction: The fifth goal of Sustainable Development in the United Nations 2030 agenda is gender equality which is often expressed in violence against women, affecting their various areas of development. Objective: Establish the relationship between domestic gender violence and depression in women from Piura, Peru. Method: A causal correlational study was carried out. The sample consisted of 343 women aged 18 to 62 whom Beck Depression Inventory and Domestic Violence Scale were applied. Results: 43.7% of women had a high prevalence of domestic violence, and 58.6% had high levels of depression. Significant correlations were found between domestic gender violence and depression in women (Sig. 0.000). Conclusions: The practical implications of the results were analyzed to promote the development of transversal policies that encourage symmetrical and peaceful coexistence with equal opportunities between both sexes, characteristics that strengthen psychological well-being.
